Did you know that Senora Smart Dodd was the person behind the first Father’s Day back in 1910? When Dodd was 16 she lost her mother and the responsibility of raising the children fell to her father William Jackson Smart. Sometime later, she heard a sermon at church about Mother’s Day and thought that “There needs to be a day for fathers too”.  Dodd proposed the idea of a day to honor fathers to her local church alliance in Spokane and thus the first Father’s Day was born!

Over the years the idea of Father’s Day spread and people lobbied congress to establish the holiday. President Calvin Coolidge approved Father’s Day as a national holiday in 1924 in hopes that families would “establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations”.
